What is CCTV?
A CCTV (closed-circuit television) system consist of one or more video
cameras in a "closed circuit" which is not intended for public
broadcast. CCTV cameras vary widely in design and application. Camera systems
are available in black and white or color. Almost all modern CCTV camera
designs use solid state CCD (charge coupled device) image pickups. The CCD
has replaced the vacuum tube pickups used previously. The cost of a CCD
camera is a fraction of yesteryear's tube camera. Also, CCD cameras are not
subject to image burns and require minimal maintenance. Most CCTV systems
include one or more video time lapse recorders capable of recording tapes in
excess of 24 hours. Complex systems may have a video matrix switcher and
computerized camera control.

Why use CCTV?
CCTV cameras are a vital part of today's society. They are
used as a deterrent to help control shoplifting, vandalism, robbery, theft,
and acts of violence. Most CCTV systems include a time lapse VCR with a
date/time stamp which can be used as evidence. Below are a few common
applications of CCTV
General Surveillance (Security)
General surveillance CCTV systems are used to monitor parking lots,
employee work areas, warehouses, industrial complexes, schools, college
campuses etc. The systems vary widely in size and design. These systems are
commonly used as an aid to security and to control/deter acts of crime,
employee pilferage, employee safety, etc. Small systems may have a few fixed
cameras while large systems may have over a hundred fixed, pan & tilt,
and dome cameras. In large complexes, CCTV cameras may be located in multiple
buildings and communicate to a central control point over coaxial cable,
fiber optic, telephone wire, RF, or microwave transmission. One or more time
lapse VCRs are normally included to provide video archives. Some systems
include motion detectors, magnetic door contacts, etc. to alarm the CCTV
system. Alarms may be processed by displaying an associated camera, sending a
dome camera to a preshot, and/or activating a VCR to record.
Digital Video Recording

Retail
CCTV cameras have become common place in department stores, malls,
specialty shops, service stations, etc. As well as providing evidence, they
are often used as a deterrent to shop-lifting, vandalism, and robbery. Retail
systems vary widely in size and design. A smaller service station or
restaurant may have a few fixed cameras watching cash registers, entrances,
etc. A large department store or shopping mall may have a series of high
speed pan & tilt domes and fixed cameras which is manned by security
personnel. The security personnel use the cameras to track shoplifters and
apprehend them. Retail systems often include a POS (point of sale) system
which displays and records cash register activity and video simultaneously.
All of the above systems normally include a time lapse VCR with date/time
stamp. Video from portions of the cameras may be displayed in public view as
a deterrent.

camera is protected by special enclosures designed to protect it from heat,
dust, and corrosive chemicals. Extreme high temperature applications often
require special optics such as a "lens tube" to allows the camera
to see inside of boiler and furnace interiors. Special machine vision cameras
with high speed computer controlled shutters are used to assist in the
manufacturing of glass, soda cans, and similar processes.
